Guide 2 Christmas   >   Myrrh

Myrrh

Myrrh is a brownish resin obtained from the sap of trees of the genus Commiphora. After being extracted from the tree, it coagulates quickly, and eventually becomes a hard and glossy gum. The gum is initially yellowish, but may be either clear or opaque. Over a period of time, the gum gradually darkens in color, and white streaks may also appear.

Myrrh was used as an anointing oil, in incense, and during ancient times burned during funerals. It was extremely valuable (worth more than its weight in gold).

The Gospel of Matthew tells us that Myrrh was one of the gifts brought to the infant Jesus by the Magi (the other gifts being gold and frankincense).

In Christian tradition, Myrrh is interpreted as symbol of divine authority, because of its use as incense.
