Tobbogan
A tobbogan is a simple type of sled, today
often used as a child's toy or for Winter recreational activities.
A tobbogan differs from most sleds
in that it either has no runners or skis at all, or only
very low ones. Even when has runners,
the bottom of the tobbogan rides directly on top of the
snow.
- A traditional tobbogan is made from two bent wooden slats (each in a J-shape),
with a flat bed between them.
- A rope or string, attached to the slats provides
steering.
- The rider sits on the flat bed, and uses the rope or string to steer
(often using their feet).
- If there is more than one rider, the driver sits at the front, and additional
riders sit in a line behind him, with each person holding the waist of the person
in front.
- Although traditionally made from wood, modern tobbogans are often made from
other materials such as plastic, composite, or aluminium.
Although, for many people, tobbogans are regarded children's toy,
they do sometimes have serious uses: they were (and still are) the traditional form of transport of the Innu
and Cree peoples of northern Canada.
