Bethlehem is the town in Palestine where the gospels (Luke 2:4 and Matthew 2:1) tell us that Jesus Christ was born.
The story in the Gospels tells us that a census was taking place, and that because of the rules of the census, Joseph and Mary (who was pregnant) had to travel to Bethlehem.
When Joseph and Mary reached Bethlehem, there was no room at the inn for them to stay. They therefore, and they had to stay in a stable. It was here, in the humblest of circumstances, that the Lord Jesus Christ was born.
After Jesus was born, he was visited by shepherds who had been informed of the birth of the Savior by an angel. Additionally, Jesus was visited by the magi (also known as the wisemen or kings), who were led to the stable by the appearance of the wandering star of Bethlehem.
Today, the Church of the Nativity , which is probably the oldest Christian church in the world (it was built by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great in 330 AD), stands near the center of Bethlehem over a cave known as the Holy Crypt. According to Christian tradition, this is the exact place where Jesus was born.
